Vitamin C is obtained in all fresh fruits, vegetables, and juices. There are a few unconventional high sources of vitamin C in nature such as rosehips, Indian gooseberry, etc. When it comes to the best vitamin C supplement, there is no one-size-fits-all. The nutrient can be derived from a variety of sources.

Vitamin C is a “scavenger antioxidant,” which means it destroys free radicals circulating in the body. This helps to protect cells against oxidative damage. Vitamin C helps make collagen, which in turn helps the body produce strong connective tissues and heal wounds. In case of a minor vitamin C deficiency, a person faces the following: - bleeding gums, feelings of lethargy, cracked nails, brittle hair, skin that is easily bruised, or experience muscle or joint pain. The sources of natural vitamin C include amla, citrus fruits, strawberries, potatoes, tomatoes, etc.

The permitted dose of vitamin C depends on a person’s age and other factors. The daily recommended allowance of Vitamin C for adults is about 40 mg. Researchers have found that a person absorbs about 70- 90% of Vitamin C when she consumes 30–180 mg a day. At higher doses of above one gram a day, absorption falls to less than 50%. The rest gets excreted in your urine.

Amla & Vitamin C

Indian gooseberry (amla) is a rich source of natural vitamin C, with a concentration of 600 mg- 1800 mg of ascorbic acid in every 100 g. Amla contains substances that partially protect the vitamin from being destroyed during the heating or drying process. Amla juice is highly acidic and prevents the loss of vitamin C. According to research, naturally occurring vitamin C in amla is better absorbed by the body than the synthetic form of the vitamin due to the presence of bioflavonoids, which aid absorption.

Vitamin C supplements containing amla are considered to be one of the best.
