Vitamin B12 Benefits For Athletes

Proper balanced distribution of vitamins and minerals is a key component for success of every athlete. During exercise, the body is in a tremendous stress phase due to which there are slight changes in functioning of pathways, increase in loss of nutrients, low oxygen due to low hemoglobin levels. Micronutrients and vitamins are very much necessary to replenish all these clinical signs where exclusively B12 has a crucial role to play. Vitamin B12 also known as cobalamin is available in two forms termed as adenosyl cobalamin and methyl cobalamin which are coenzymes responsible for DNA synthesis, metabolism, neurological functioning majorly. To improve performance, ergogenic aids are very vital for athletes in which B12 plays a vital role. Common symptoms observed in athletes are tingling in hands and feet, numbness, fatigue, confusion, lack of coordination, strict veganism.

Decreased red blood cells would reduce the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood therefore reducing aerobic performance. B12 helps to produce the myelin sheath which surrounds the nerves. Hence, any athlete who is deficient of this vitamin, a drop in performance will be observed.

Sleep is also an important aspect for recovery in athletes. Vitamin B12 plays a role in the production of melatonin which enhances good quality sleep, a stabilized mood and motivation allowing the much needed recovery to occur.

As per research, maximum of the athletes are on nutritional or oral supplementation whether its protein or multivitamins to improve performance and endurance! The recommended daily amount of Vitamin B12 is 2.4mcg per day for an athlete.
