What is Sucralose?

Excessive amounts of added sugar can have detrimental effects on your metabolism and overall health. For this reason, many people turn to artificial sweeteners like sucralose, etc. Sucralose is a zero-calorie artificial sweetener which is made from sugar in a multi-step patented chemical process in which 3 hydrogen-oxygen groups are replaced with chlorine atoms. It is commonly used as a sugar substitute in both cooking and baking. Sucralose is used in thousands of food and beverage products, from baked goods to beverages, and the number of products is steadily climbing. It's also added to thousands of food products worldwide with a variety of combinations.

Sucralose: Good or Bad?

Sucralose is a calorie-free, but some brands it is used in, also contains the carbs dextrose (glucose) and maltodextrin, which brings the calorie content up to 3.36 calories per gram. However, the total calories and carbs contribute to your diet are negligible, as you only need tiny amounts of it each time. Sucralose is 400–700 times sweeter than sugar and does not have a bitter aftertaste like many other popular sweeteners available in the market.

Effects on blood sugar and Insulin and its effects?

Sucralose is said to have little or no effects on blood sugar and insulin levels. However, this may depend on you as an individual and whether you're used to consuming artificial sweeteners. Sucralose may raise blood sugars and insulin levels in individuals who do not consume artificial sweeteners regularly. However, it probably has no effect on individuals who regularly use artificial sweeteners.

It is frequently recommended for people with diabetes as an alternative to sugar-sweetened foods and beverages. Some researches show that sucralose does not raise blood sugar levels or otherwise affect blood glucose control in humans. Also, some research has shown that sucralose has no adverse effects on expecting or nursing mothers or on the fetus, and there are no known side effects of sucralose consumption.

Products containing sucralose provide a sweet taste and are often low or lower in carbohydrates, which is important for individuals who must monitor their carbohydrate intake. It does not raise blood sugar levels or otherwise affect blood glucose control.

Products that contain zero-calorie sweeteners are often marketed as being good for weight loss. Sucralose and other artificial sweeteners do not seem to have any major effects on body weight. It does not promote dental cavities.

The amount that can be consumed over a person's lifetime without any adverse effects is 9 mg per kg of body weight per day.
