From its beginning in 2008, the Indian Premier League (IPL) has witnessed an uprising in the history of Indian cricket. The competition has delivered numerous young talents throughout the years who have utilized this stage to make a name for themselves in the world of cricket.

Over the years, we have seen budding cricketers forge their way and own the field. Scoring tons of runs, many batsmen have taken away the Orange Caps over the last 13 years.

Shaun Marsh – 2008

Shaun Marsh was a fresh face when the Indian Premier League started in 2008. Roped in by Kings XI Punjab, Marsh ended up being the steady run-scorer for the competition. Despite the fact that Rajasthan Royals took the trophy home, the Australian cricketer returned home with the Orange Cap.

Matthew Hayden – 2009

Chris Gayle – 2011

Chris Gayle is undeniably the best T20 player in the game. His ability to hit the ball fiercely is unmatched and he can hit the ball from any lengths along with clearing the ground with ease.

Gayle won the Orange Cap during the 4th season of IPL as he was the highest run scorer of the edition. He scored a total of 608 runs from 12 matches which helped him win the award.

Chris Gayle – 2012

Gayle became the first player in the history of tournaments to earn the Orange Cap back-to-back for two years for his team – Royal Challengers Bangalore. Gayle scored 733 runs in that season and was his highest score so far in any season of IPL.

Michael Hussey – 2013

It is no doubt that MS Dhoni has brilliantly led his team – Chennai Super Kings over the years and they have even produced many gems and Michael Hussey took the spotlight during the 2013 edition of the game.

Hussey scored 733 runs from 17 matches at an average of 52.35 including six half-centuries at a strike-rate of 129.50.

Robin Uthappa – 2014

With an ample amount of experience on his side, Robin shouldered the responsibility at the top of the batting order. He scored 660 runs from 16 games with five half-centuries at an average of 44. The right-handed batsman scored runs almost in all the matches giving them their second IPL title after 2012. 

David Warner – 2015

Undoubtedly, David Warner is a huge name in the field of cricket. The Australian batsman was at his best in the in the 2015 edition of IPL. He scored 562 runs from 14 games with seven fifties in that season. He took batting to an all new level in the season of IPL.

Virat Kohli – 2016

With 973 runs from 16 matches including 4 enormous centuries and 7 fifties, the world cricket saw the legend of the current generation grace the fans with some amazing hits. It was Virat Kohli who practically broke all the possible records from the prior season to gather a record-breaking 973 runs.

Nonetheless, it was insufficient to help Royal Challengers Bangalore to the title as they halted one stage away from the trophy losing to Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL finals. Kohli had an amazing average of 81.08 and scored a strike-rate of more than 150.

David Warner – 2017

David Warner has been one of the most consistent batsmen in the history of IPL. He starred for the Sunrisers Hyderabad during their successful season in 2016, although Warner didn’t finish as the highest run-scorer.

Meanwhile, Warner came back in the next edition to showcase his talent once again. The southpaw scored 641 runs from 14 matches to finish as the highest run-getter of the tournament and take home the Orange Cap.

Kane Williamson – 2018

Although Chennai Super Kings took the trophy home, Kane Williamson won the Orange Cap. He scored 735 runs from 17 matches at an average of 52.50 including 8 half-centuries. He showed some classical display of batting mainly focusing on ones and twos but also maintained a good strike-rate throughout the season.

David Warner – 2019

After serving a one year ban, Warner came back to cricket with all the guns blazing. He smacked completely everything available to him and forged a breathtaking association with Jonny Bairstow at the head of the order.

Before leaving India to perform his national duties, the Australian batsman scored 692 runs from 12 matches including eight half centuries and 100. The southpaw was consistent during his stay and showcased his capabilities to the world.

KL Rahul – 2020

Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, the IPL was played in the UAE and in the 13th IPL season KL Rahul managed to bag the Orange Cap at last. The Kings XI Punjab skipper managed to score 670 runs in 14 innings.

KL Rahul finished the tournament as the Highest scorer.

Ruturaj Gaikwad – 2021

Ruturaj Gaikwad – 2021

The youngest ever batsmen to earn an Orange Cap. He was the top run-getter of the season. He managed to score 635 runs in 16 innings.
He managed to flush out 64 Fours which is the most fours of the whole season compared to any other batsman. He also managed to smoke 23 sixes which is joint second most to KL Rahul’s 30 sixes.
