Healthy Navratri Fasting Foods

Navratri means nine nights of worship, the most popular and favorite of Indian population. Many people fast during this spiritual phase. Mental peace, detoxification of body, relief from gastric issues, hydration, maintenance of blood pressure are the following benefits of Navratri fasting.

Diet plays very important role here since vegetables, herbs and spices, non - vegetarian foods are not allowed during fasting which makes it easier for people to make simple dishes. But the main complication here is lack of protein.

The following foods can be consumed during fast –

  1. Buckwheat flour: Loaded with fiber, antioxidants, gluten free, high in protein
  2. Sago: Boosts energy, easy to digest
  3. Foxnut: Also known as makhana, provides calcium and essential nutrients
  4. Dairy products: Since it’s considered holy, milk, khoa, paneer, curds, yoghurt can be consumed.
  5. Arrowroot flour: Acts as binder and thickener, very nutritious
  6. Ghee: Provides energy and good healthy fats essential for the body.
  7. Fruits: Variety of fruits can be consumed for good immunity and essential vitamins intake
  8. Nuts and seeds: Good source to increase energy levels as well as increase in high biological value of proteins.

Precautions to be taken against -

  • Oily/fried foods
  • Simple carbohydrates like sugar, Maida
  • Salt
  • Avoid starving
  • Avoid preservative foods

Not just fasting will help, but internal peace, proper hydration, good quality sleep, patience are magical pillars which will encounter more spirituality from within.
