Which Team will Win IPL 2021? Squad Analysis

MI, CSK & DC are the top three contenders

IPL 2021

The Indian Premier League, 2021 has moved to UAE for the second half of the tournament. With almost all teams having played same number of matches, the second half will be quite important for the teams to book their place in the playoffs. The teams in the top-4 would want to continue their good run while the bottom places teams will look at it as a second chance to re-strategize and work up their way to the top. Let us look at each teams and analyze their squad based on their table ranking after the conclusion of Indian-leg of the tournament –

1. Delhi Capitals (P: 8, W: 6, Pts.: 12)

The table toppers, DC, had a terrific campaign so far. The explosive opening pair of Shaw and Dhawan has set the power play on fire and made it easier for the other batters that follow. Shikhar Dhawan is the leading run getter so far and would be looking to score more runs in second half. The middle order and lower order hasn’t been tested as yet but DC have enough firepower in the form of Pant and now with the return of Shreyas Iyer, the team will be motivated to do well. Their bowlers have been economical too. DC could very well better their previous season standing and go on to lift their maiden IPL title.

2. Chennai Super Kings (P: 7, W:5, Pts.: 10)

CSK, the team to make most appearances in the play-offs are running for another tabletop finish. The addition of Moeen at top and red-hot form of Faf along with Ruturaj Gaikward has been quite successful for the team. The likes of Raina, Rayudu and Dhoni too have made significant contributions. All-rounders like Jadeja, Curran and Bravo too have looked in good form. Deepak Chahar has taken wickets in heaps and Shardul is coming on the back of impressive performance in England. Death bowling can still improve. UAE wasn’t a good outing for CSK last year but this year the odds certainly look different.

3. Royal Challengers Bangalore (P: 7, W:5, Pts.: 10)

RCB in IPL 2021 looked a completely different team that looked more determined and confident. Harshal Patel, the purple cap holder, was their star performer along with the young southpaw Devdutt Padikal. Both of them have played exceptionally well to make RCB a force to reckon this year. Kohli and ABD have always been the pillars of the franchise and the addition of international stars like Maxwell and Jameison has further made the team stronger. Chahal & Siraj have contributed too. The death bowling looks an area where RCB would want to make more improvements to lift the trophy for the first time.

4. Mumbai Indians (P: 7, W: 4, Pts.: 8)

The defending champions, MI, had started their journey in typical MI way and gained momentum as the tournament went along. Their captain has led them from front even with the bat and his opening partner De Cock has supported him superbly. Suryakumar’s purple patch has continued and has played some exceptional knocks. Bumrah and Chahar have been the phenomenal. Other bowlers are like Boult are yet to make a mark this year. However, MI would want more from the bat from their troika of all-rounders – Pandya brothers and Pollard to complete the hat trick of IPL title wins.

5. Rajasthan Royals (P: 7, W:3, Pts.: 6)

RR has started their journey well with their captain Samson and Buttler were looking in good form. Both, scored match winning centuries as well. The most expensive IPL player, Chris Morris, has been lethal with the ball and even won them a game with bat proving his prowess as a brilliant all-rounder. Mustafizur has been their go bowlers and Chetan Sakariya’s stocks too have risen during the first leg of the tournament. However, RR would go into the second half with their major overseas player replaced due to non-availability due to many reasons, making it a steep climb to the champion finish.

6. Punjab Kings (P: 8, W: 3, Pts.: 6)

PBKS and their tryst with maiden IPL title has continued. Their batting has looked solid with Mayank and captain Rahul providing solid starts, followed by the Boss Gayle who has played a couple of good knocks for the side. Here is where their batting has tapered off but Shahrukh Khan has been a bright spot for them. Their main bowler Shami has been accurate as ever and spin department too has been economical. PBKS too face the same issue like RR and would hope that the new replacements could bring in renewed hope and energy to their campaign.

7. Kolkata Knight Riders (P: 7, W: 2, Pts.: 4)

KKR, the two time IPL champions will see the second leg as a chance to get their campaign back on track. Nitish Rana’s form with the bat has been exceptional and he has been their highest run scorer so far in the tournament. Their highest wicket taker – Pat Cummins has opted out of the tournament making the role of Indian bowlers more valuable for the second half. However, all hopes of KKR fans will be pinned on their swash-bucking all-rounder Andre Russell and world cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan to lift them up.

8. Sunrisers Hyderabad (P: 7, W: 1, Pts.: 2)

SRH, the 2018 champions, too would have welcomed the covid break to rejig their plans to lift the trophy once more. Rashid Khan their main man has grown from strength to strength from the time he has featured in the IPL and this season was no different. The newly appointed captain Williamson has recently led his national team to the inaugural WTC championship and would want to replicate the success in IPL too. Their campaign needs a complete overhaul if they want to give themselves a chance to finish in the top-4.
