The arrival of the Monsoon season always tends to give a good feeling of nostalgia and excitement in our hearts. It’s lovely to wake up to an unexpected rainy day when it seems like the rain gods have finally heard our prayers after sweltering summer! Sadly, monsoon is also the time when diseases, particularly of the gut system, are rampant. Poor digestion leads to a form of ‘cellular starvation’ which in turns lowers your metabolism and increases fat storage.

While the monsoon offers a respite from the heat of summer, it also gets with it lots of diseases. This is the time when some people will be suffering from cold, flu, malaria, typhoid, jaundice, and other diseases. It also degrades the immunity of our body and makes you susceptible to many diseases which are commonly associated with this season like cold and flu. Hence, it is time for us to keep our body resistant against diseases by boosting our immunity and taking precautions against these diseases. One must prevent the side effects of the rains by following some points:

Keep your house clean: Your house should be clean and pest-free during the monsoon season. Check for water clogging or leakage, especially in and around coolers, ACs and the washing machine area (if you keep it in the balcony or open space). Replace any broken drain pipes as they can act as a breeding ground for pests. Get pest control done at home.

Keep the hand sanitiser handy: Wash your hands often and keep a hand sanitiser with you when you travel.

Switch to good light cooking oils: As much as you love eating bhajia during monsoons - avoid deep-fried foods as they make one feel heavy, slow metabolic rate, and are difficult to digest. If you still want to indulge in a few monsoon munchies use good lighter oils such as Corn oil or Olive oil instead of heavy cooking oils such as Mustard or Sesame oil.

Take a shower if you get wet: The shower will wash off any infection or germs that might have passed on to you. Also, avoid sitting in an AC room with wet clothes or hair so that you don’t fall sick.

Include Dry fruits: Dry fruits like walnuts, almonds and dates provide the essential vitamins and minerals for building immunity. It’s very essential for including the daily essential supplements for immunity and good heart, bone and overall health.

Water: Many infections during the monsoon are water-borne. Use a water purifier or boil the water for at least 10 minutes before drinking it. Avoid drinking water outside; always carry a small bottle of water with you and stay hydrated. Avoid drinking cold drinks, especially the ice, as you never know what kind of water is used while making it. Apart from water-borne diseases, collection of stagnant water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes; malaria and dengue are quite common during the monsoons, so keep your surroundings clean and dry.

Have soups: Go easy on coffee or tea and instead have soups and broths which has a variety of spices in it which help increase the mucus production in nasal passages which fights against the foreign pathogens.

Vitamin C: Vitamin C is a strong anti-oxidant that can strengthen your body’s natural defences. It does so by protecting cells from harmful molecules called free radicals. It encourages the production of white blood cells known as lymphocytes and phagocytes, which help protect the body against infections. And so supplementation in this season becomes very essential. One step solution to having the required daily dose to maintain the Vitamin C levels would be inculcated Vitamin C supplements which will not only boost up the immunity and maintain overall health.

Take influenza and pneumonia shots, especially if you’re asthmatic. Don’t pop antibiotics indiscriminately. Most infections are viral and antibiotics work on bacteria only. Stay at home if you are sick. It gives you the rest you need and doesn’t make others sick too.

Indian species: Include more immunity boosting spices in your food like turmeric, mustard, asafoetida (hing), coriander, turmeric, fenugreek (methi), cloves, pepper, cinnamon, garlic, ginger and curry leaves. They help in digestion and to flush out any sinuses from the body. It increases the immunity by fighting against the outside microorganisms which will keep the cold and flu away.
