Intricate relation between Cardiovascular health and Omega 3 fatty acids

What is Omega 3 fatty acids and what are its dietary source?

Omega 3 fatty acids are class of essential fatty acids found in fish oils and mainly consist of three important components ALA, EPA and DHA that act to reduce the levels of LDL (Low density lipoproteins) in the blood. (LDL cholesterol is considered “Bad” cholesterol)
Two principal omega – 3 fatty acids are EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid) and DHA (Docosahexanoic Acid). ALA (Alpha-linolenic acid) helps in conversion of essential fatty acid as body is not able to synthesize EPA and DHA.
Dietary source of Omega 3 fatty acids include Salmon, Sardines, Herring, Canola, Walnut, Chia seeds, Flax seeds, Canola oil, Spinach, Berries and Broccoli. Ideally, with high sea food and a mix of plant based diets one is able to maintain required Omega 3 dosage for efficient functioning of heart, brain and Joint health.

Hitting the headline

As per national reports CVD (Cardiovascular death) is the leading cause of death in India. In 2016 itself an estimated 62.5million years of life was lost as a result of CVD. One alarming fact with CVD being every 1 in 4 deaths in India results from CVDs with Ischemic heart disease and stroke responsible for more than 80% of the burden.

Diet and Heart Disease

A diet rich in fats and Triglycerides increases the deposition of cholesterol in the blood vessel. Long term deposition results in atherosclerosis – a condition in which plaque formation occurs in blood vessels that blocks or hinders the supply of oxygen and nutrients to heart muscles. Arteries damage may result from high blood pressure, tobacco smoke and diabetes. CHD results in angina, chest pain or Cardiac arrest
