Father's Day: 5 Health Tips For The Men In Your Lives

Generally speaking, dietary guidelines apply the same to all adults, however, men are more prone to many lifestyle choices that can lead to poor health. And so, in celebration of Father’s Day this year, let’s ensure that the men in our lives stay healthy and active.

Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet

Eating a diet that's relatively low in fat (aim for lower than 7 percent of calories absorbed from saturated fats), cholesterol, and salt, is an essential characteristic of a healthy diet at an older age. You should try to consume a good amount of fresh fruits and vegetables (2 cups of fruit per day; 3 cups of vegetables per day for men up to age 50 and 2.5 cups for men aged 51 and over). Moreover, whole grains and fiber can help nourish your health, prevent heart disease, diabetes and certain cancers.

Break a sweat

Aim to get 30 minutes of moderate physical activity on more days than not in the week. Taking a walk outside, jogging, or any other physical exertion all count. Try not to go into fitness mania. Begin slowly and gradually build your way upwards. Research shows that even short bursts of physical activity—as little as 10 minutes of intense activity, consistently repeated over days, can help men improve their health.

Lose the gut

Excess weight can be baggage you don’t want to carry. Fat stored in the belly area is linked to heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and other illnesses that can be prevented by maintaining a fit abdomen. Manage and monitor your BMI to ensure you are at a healthy weight

Drink alcohol in moderation

If you drink alcohol, limit your consumption to no more than two alcoholic beverages per day.

Learn to manage stress

Over time, stress can severely deteriorate the body’s wellness. Stress has been linked to increase the risk of conditions like obesity, heart disease, Alzheimer's disease, diabetes, depression, gastrointestinal problems, and asthma. Often poor nutrition also leads to stress, for example, magnesium supplements are used to fight daily stress and promote sleep. It is important you find way to de-stress. Discuss with your dear ones, about how they can help you integrate these healthy tips into your everyday life and stick with them!
