What Are BCAA Supplements and How Can They Help Me Train Longer

Branched-Chain Amino Acids or BCAA, is a group of three essential amino acids namely leucine, isoleucine, and valine. BCAA supplements are generally taken in order to boost muscle growth, enhance performance, and reduce fatigue after exercise.

BCAA Supplements

  • BCAAs are essential because they are not made in our body, yet they form more than one-third of the protein found in human muscle tissue.
  • Rich dietary sources of BCAAs include dairy, egg, meat, poultry, fish, soy products, such as tofu and tempeh, nuts and seeds.
  • BCAA administration prior to and following exercise may reduce the severity and duration of delayed onset muscle soreness- the painful sensation that lasts for several days after an intense or unaccustomed exercise period.
  • BCAAs may also help maintain normal blood sugar levels. Leucine and isoleucine are thought to increase insulin secretion and cause your muscles to take in more sugar from your blood, thereby decreasing your blood sugar levels.
  • Many people who purchase BCAA supplements do so to increase their muscle mass. Research shows that BCAAs do activate enzymes responsible for building muscle. Some studies also show that BCAA supplements may be effective at increasing muscle mass, especially if they contain a higher proportion of leucine than isoleucine and valine.
  • Intense, high volume training repeated over days and weeks can lead to fatigue, immune suppression, and overtraining if an athlete does not recover adequately between training bouts. Researchers have found that BCAAs can also be used by immune cells within the gut as a fuel source, which allows the immune system to regenerate itself more efficiently and protect against harmful pathogens.

Any possible side effects?

Taking BCAA supplements is generally safe and without side effects for most people. However, BCAA supplements are not recommended for those suffering from ALS.
