1. Career Highlights - Medals of Glory
Thomas Bobby Philip (Bobby as he is fondly called in the running community) is an inspiration to many and it seems only fair when you read his list of accomplishments! So, read and be ready to revere him!

  • Only Barefoot runner in Boston Marathon (2015)

  • 3hrs 6mins 34s in Standard Charted Mumbai Marathon (2016)

  • 1h 18m 37s at Airtel Delhi Half Marathon

  • 36m 51s at TCS World 10K

2. His sport & what he loves about it - His Passion
Thomas loves to run and in his words he explains why. He says, 'Every morning I cannot think of anything better than to experience the great weather of Bangalore with a run which gives me a chance to meet my friends and stay healthy. Another motivating factor is the measurable progress years on year giving the inspiration to continue with the effort and the importance of overall physical fitness plays a key role in my runs.'

3. What got him started - How the journey began
Thomas' journey started due to father-daughter bonding! While he would get his daughter prepared for her school sports event, he was also forced to run! But later he recognized this as his passion and the rest as they say is history.

4. His fitness mantra
Thomas follows a regime of running thrice a week and strengthening workouts twice a week. Strengthening is a simple body-weight workout of around 45 mins to an hour.

5. Biggest sport challenge
Thomas believes his biggest challenge is being injury free. He says that with intense and long runs come the chances of getting injured which impacts your training especially when the body demands longer recovery time. He adds that taking the time for cross fitness workouts is pretty challenging too.

6. Favorite sport memory
Thomas' favorite memory is that of running the Boston Marathon barefoot through the chilled weather of 5 Degrees Celsius with the drizzling rain. He adds that his foot got numb in the initial couple of kilometers, and he still continued to run with the 'feeling of hitting my feet on solid rock, with each step.' Thomas' believes that he was lucky to not get the frostbite and was able to run the next Full Marathon in Big Sur within 6 days, without any new injuries!
That is truly an inspiring anecdote.

7. What he'd like to share with fellow fitness enthusiasts
Thomas advises to start easy and enjoy the process of running. He suggests to include fitness workouts, which are pretty easy and simple. He recommends to start with 15 minutes workout everyday and slowly build the body strength to progress up to 45 minutes or an hour which can include basic stretching sessions as well.

8. Favorite Fast&Up fuel
In Thomas' words, 'Initially it was Fast&Up Activate as the fuel before my long runs. Now I am also a fan of Recover & Charge post every workout, including the strengthening workouts.'


9. What his normal training day looks like
Thomas says that is everyday training is not very different from many of his running friends. He adds that the only key difference could be better utilization of time by not watching TV or similar time wasting pursuits!
Thomas days begins at 5am and he gets ready for his workout by 5.45 AM. If the day includes running then he is back home by around 7.30 AM which includes 15 minutes stretching, 15 minutes with his Compost, 15 minutes in the terrace garden and then freshen up for breakfast and leave for office. If the plan for the day includes Strengthening workouts, it starts from 6 AM and goes on till 7.30 AM. Thomas then proceeds to have 2 eggs post the workout, 15 minutes with his Compost, 15 mins in the terrace garden and then freshen up for breakfast and office.
His weekend long runs see him get up by 4 AM and leave home by 5 for a 2 to 3 hour long run which he ends with 30 minutes of stretching. Thomas tries to reach home by 9 or 9.30 to support family with the household chores, shopping and many other initiatives I am associated with. With a schedule like this he adds that he doesn't get much time to relax. Not that we are surprised!

10. Favorite place to train - Training Haven
Thomas' preferred training areas are the following:
● Any place with minimal traffic
● Around the Old Airport
● Cubbon Park
● Kanakapura Road

11. Everyday fitness diet
Thomas' everyday diet includes chicken, fish, eggs and vegetables for the main meals of the day. He also ensured to have nuts, fruits for additional nutrients. He adds that Fast&Up products have now become a part of his daily diet.

12. His fitness inspiration
In Thomas' words, 'Running is my fitness inspiration. For strong & injury free runs, fitness is the mantra.'

13. His biggest motivation
Thomas loves to challenge himself and gauge his progress across years which proves to be a big motivating factor for him.

14. What pushes him to the finish line
The hope of achieving the set target and the thrill of running strong till the finish.

15. One goal he'd like to achieve
Sub 36 minutes in 10K run and sub 3 hours Full Marathon (the latter which he achieved at the SCMM 2017!)

16. Importance of sports nutrition in his life
In Thomas' words, 'In our very busy lifestyle, we tend to ignore the basic nutrition requirements for the body. Also with the rigorous workouts, we are starved of basic nutrients. Proper diet including fresh vegetables, fruits, meat, fish, egg provide them and can further be supplemented with Fast&Up products for instant source of nutrition.'
